JS Humidifiers has recently supplied two Neptronic SKE resistive steam humidifiers to the Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company to meet the close control humidity requirements required in its litho printing and transfer area.

Jim Buckley, Works Engineer for Royal Crown Derby, commented, “We were experiencing problems with dry air, especially during the winter months. The low humidity levels were causing the transfer papers to shrink and curl which was resulting in mis-registration of the colours on the porcelain.”

“The Neptronic SKE humidifier was selected as we needed a unit that was low in maintenance and that provides very close control over humidity to maintain the 53-57% relative humidity we require. As the SKE has a scale management system and doesn’t need replacement boiling cylinders, this humidifier was also going to be the most economical.”

Jim continued, ”Since the unit has been installed we have incurred no production loss through dry air or equipment breakdown, which has in turn resulted in greater productivity in the printing and transfer area.”

The Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company was established in 1750 and is based on a 4½ acre site in Osmaston Road, in Derby. The company employs about 300 people and manufactures the highest quality English Fine Bone China.

Two Neptronic humidifiers were installed at the site in Derby producing 40kg of steam per hour and, due to their success at the plant, a further unit is now on order.

The heating elements of the Neptronic SKE are thicker than the elements used in other resistive humidifiers. This difference in size allows the elements to boil the water with a lower surface temperature across the elements, thus attracting less scale, whilst also undergoing greater expansion and contraction through the heating cycles. This increased fluctuation in size literally cracks the scale from the surface of the elements, allowing it to be flushed away during normal operation.

The Neptronic SKE also incorporates very few plastic components, resulting in a lower number of spare parts and servicing requirements. Unlike other resistive steam humidifiers that incorporate plastic scale collector buckets, cylinder liners, float assemblies and hose sets that bend warp out of shape when heated, the SKE is 98% metal construction.

A stainless steel evaporation chamber and rust proof aluminium casing, with baked enamel finish, combine with its anti-foaming technology to allow JS Humidifiers to offer the only two year warranty on all components, including elements, available on any resistive humidifier in the UK.
